The Tarnita Lake`s emerge gave Gilau mountains a special attractiveness. In few places from Romania the hardwood forest, combined with steep slopes and with the clearness of the bottomless waters, modeled such a beautiful landscape.
Those who visit the zone, attracted mostly by the waves of Tarnita Lake, have to know that the area offers many choices for the ones who love active holidays. Firstly, they can go from the hut in a spectacular hiking (alone or with a guide) which lead to mountain peaks as Ijar (1234 m), Arsurii (1284 m), Blidarului (1104 m) or Farcasu (1041 m). The paths smoothly ascend on these peaks, in slowly gussets so even those who are less physical trained can see the show offered by the nature.
What defines these trips, beside the many places that offer amazing views of the lake, is the changing landscape which is characteristic to the transition from hardwood forest to the coniferous forest.
Those who want to make even longer routes, can choose spectacular routes which can be made with the mountain bike, car or by foot. From Marisel you can go across the mountain, on the Drumul Generalului until Maguri Racatau, coming back to Tarnita on the inferior course of Somesul Rece River. A longer but very spectacular trip can be done on Marisel-Blajoaia-Vojoita-Irisoara-Somesul Rece- Tarnita route.
Those who want more athletically activities can make one of the most amazing and solicitant trips, on Cheile Somesului Cald Mijlociu. From Marisel Colonie you go on Somes up, following the water course. After about 3 km the route becomes difficult and after you pass Moara Veche, the trip is recommended only to those who are physical and technically well trained. The trip ends under the dam of Belis Fantanele; be careful, this route is forbidden in the days where there's the risk of a torrential rain because of a flood risk. From mid-June until late autumn, the nature offers the visitors who are passioned of the gathering, consuming or conserving of berries, all types that exist in Romania's mountains. The strawberries appear at the end of June and after them the raspberry; the ending of August belongs to cranberries.
Those who like to look for mushrooms in the forests, the clime and variation on the altitude on Tarnita area offers them all the types that are characteristic to the hardwood and coniferous forests. From June, when the chanterelle mushrooms appear, until November when the last ghebe disappear, we found in the surrounding forests hot sponges, Flap mushrooms (boletus).
